English as an Additional Language

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) program exists to provide an English immersion experience for beginner and intermediate level English language learners.

Program Summary

We offer English classes at all levels from beginner to intermediate levels. Our program is flexible. You can choose from three options:

  • Semi Intensive English  (mornings only)
  • Intensive English
  • Intensive English + University Experience

University Experience (extra charge): You have the opportunity to participate in Canadian university classes in the following subject areas: Business/Management, TESOL, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Theology and others. You will receive a certificate of attendance.

Estimated Class Size: 8-12 students

Assessment: No TOEFL or IELTS necessary. We assess learners according to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels. This means you must demonstrate what you are able to do with English language. (For descriptions of each level and other information on CLB, see Language.ca website).

You will be assessed in the four skills upon arrival and then placed in the appropriate class. Friday afternoons are also reserved for assessment.

  • If you stay for under four weeks you will be given a certificate of participation upon completion.
  • If you stay for four or more weeks you will be given progress reports at the end of each month with CLB levels verified by your assessments.
    • If you are continuing on you have the option to be assessed weekly on Friday afternoons to check your ongoing CLB progress.
    • When you leave the program you will be given a final assessment for your exit CLB level.

Opportunities: The English Language Institute combines excellent classroom instruction with the opportunity to practice your English in a Christian academic community.  While you are learning English, you can also become involved in sports, music, drama, worship, recreation, or mission trips.

Attendance and Participation: Learners are expected to attend and participate in all classes.
