Program of Study - Culture & Christianity

Cultural Studies is a sweeping term that is difficult to define. It involves multi-disciplinary explorations of all facets of human communication and artistic expression, as well as the meanings and practices that constitute ordinary life. Since Cultural Studies is interested in both “texts” and their audiences, it functions as a bridge between the humanities and the social sciences, on the assumption that cultural activity does not occur in a vacuum but in a context shaped by such variables as economics and class, gender and sexuality, race, power, politics, and historical moment.

The objective of the program is not to put religion and culture in opposition. Instead, Providence University College’s Culture and Christianity program encourages students to engage culture critically while discovering there is often richness in the artistic endeavours, symbols, activities, and achievements of the broader society of which they are part, even when these appear outside the doors of the church.

The Culture and Christianity program prepares students for graduate studies in both Cultural and Religious Studies, strengthen students’ understanding of biblical and historic Christian theological foundations, and provides the critical skills necessary to engage culture meaningfully and intelligently.

All students in degree programs are required to take a minimum of courses in a variety of general arts and sciences so as to enable them to acquire an adequate foundation and context for their chosen area of studies, and to develop a critical appreciation of scholarship in general.

Biblical and Theological Studies establish anchor points for effective Christian thinking, living, and serving in the church and in society. The Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences deepen the understanding and heighten the appreciation of human nature, thoughts, cultures, and societies. Music and Theatre foster the musical and dramatic expression of the human spirit, condition, and experience.
