Providence excited about students’ arrival
2015-09-03
With Student Leaders having already arrived and several Pilots teams beginning training camps the Providence campus is once again buzzing with activity.

Navigating the beehive are the school’s incoming Resident Directors: Cameron and Samantha Groenendijk. No doubt students living in dorm will come to know them well over the upcoming school year.

“I am in charge of the female resident students who live in our Eichhorst and Kindred Hall buildings,” says Samantha, who as Residence Life Coordinator also oversees all aspects of resident life at Providence.

She adds: “This means that I’m the first point of contact for general residence questions. I work to make sure that we’re meeting our learning objectives for programming within residence life and that these align with our departmental and institutional visions, goals, and objectives.”

Cameron is responsible for Bergen Hall—the male residence—and like Samantha will meet with student leaders once a week to check in and provide encouragement and support.

“Students will see me walking around dorm and campus frequently, partaking in events and dorm life,” he says. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with the students throughout the year.”

The ability to provide mentorship is key of the role of Resident Director, and both RDs are eager to connect with students.

“I have the privilege of walking alongside students—living where they live; doing much of what they do—as they build community with one another, which is a beautiful and challenging process for both them and me,” says Samantha.

“Students are more than welcome to come to me and chat, hang out, or talk about anything regarding dorm life, academic life, or personal life,” adds Cameron. “I’m very excited to get to build new relationships and memories through events spent with students.

Cameron is also anticipating Monday’s Community BBQ, which will bring students and their families as well as faculty and staff together.

“It will be great getting to see everyone in the Providence community in one place, all gathering to share a meal together,” he says.

Samantha pinpoints Friday’s Welcome Banquet as an event she’s especially looking forward to.

“This event is a fun time for our entire community as we gather together to officially mark the beginning of another school year,” she says. It is a great, stress-free atmosphere that allows for faculty, staff, and students to bond.”

A pizza party, a bonfire, and the Ice Cream Social are other Welcome Week highlights, and students can find the entire Welcome Week schedule on the new Providence App.
