Burt Loewen’s passing a “huge loss” for Providence
It was with profound sadness that the Providence community learned of Burt Loewen’s passing on Tuesday, August 25.
According to The Carillon, Loewen, 73, “passed away peacefully” at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Manitoba.
A former Providence board member and long-time supporter of the institution, he was a firm believer in Christian education and, says Gary Schellenberg, Director of Institutional Services at Providence, a “real asset to the school.”
Adds Schellenberg: “Burt was always encouraging and looking for ways to make Providence financially viable. He would often just drop by the school, sometimes on his motorbike, and chat. He also introduced others to the school.”
The Schellenbergs and Loewens were neighbours for a time in Steinbach.
“Our kids were friends,” recalls Schellenberg. “But I got to know Burt better during his tenure on the Providence Board of Directors.”
Providence President David Johnson remembers Loewen as someone who “always took a personal interest in me and in Providence.”
Loewen “was always positive” about the school’s mission, says Johnson, adding, “Burt’s death is a huge loss for Providence and the Christian community as a whole. I am sad to lose a good friend.”
The funeral service for Burt Loewen will be held Monday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Steinbach EMC, 422 Main Street, Steinbach, Manitoba.
Loewen is survived by his wife Karen, three children and their spouses, and eight grandchildren.
