Providence to Host Missionary Care Symposium
2015-05-15

Imagine a missionary care facility right here in Manitoba.

The upcoming Symposium on Third Culture Care, which will be hosted at Providence, will look to unpack the vision on May 29 and 30.

“Fifteen years ago one of our counselling faculty dreamed of an ‘institute of expatriate care and development’,” says professor Daryl Climenhaga, who teaches global studies (missions) at Providence Theological Seminary.

A third-generation missionary in Zambia and Zimbabwe who grew up a missionary kid (MK), Climenhaga describes “third culture” as the cultural change that “happens inside a person when he or she lives for an extended period of time in another culture.”

More recently Climenhaga has come together with an ad hoc committee of representatives from the Evangelical Mennonite Conference, the Evangelical Mennonite Mission Conference, Mennonite Church Canada, The Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, TeachBeyond and Avant Ministries, among others, and the committee has since made contact with Outreach Canada’s Paul Dyck, who will be one of the symposium’s presenters.

The roster of speakers also includes noted Third Culture Kid advocate Michele Phoenix, Avant Canada director Mike Reimer and Climenhaga, himself.

The Canadian MK Network has been instrumental in facilitating the event, says Climenhaga, with Charis Kehler working as the gathering’s point-person.

“This symposium is intended for pastors and mission supporters from the local church, for missionaries on home assignment and their friends, for mission agency representatives and their staff,” says Climenhaga, adding, “For many years there has been a need for more member care for such personnel from the Prairies.”

The symposium will begin Friday, May 29 at 5:30 p.m. and finish at the same time Saturday afternoon. Registration is $89 per person or $165 per couple and includes meals and accommodation.
