University College Alumnus of the Year Supports and Mobilizes Missionaries Worldwide
After graduating with a Master of Arts in Biblical Counselling from Providence (formerly Winnipeg Bible College and Seminary) in 1987, Howard Dueck was invited to stay an extra year at the school as a counselling intern.
He accepted.
“Anything,” he reminisces, “to be able to play another year on the soccer team.”
It was time well spent.
“During that year my wife Eileen and I began preparations to serve as missionaries with Janz Team (now TeachBeyond) in Brazil,” says Dueck. “We were surprised and overwhelmed by this great challenge and invitation, but seeing very clearly that God was leading in this, we accepted.”
He adds: “My year as an intern prepared us further for the challenge ahead.”
Following 10 months of language studies in Sao Paulo the Duecks began their work at Gramado Bible College in Rio Grande do Sul. Howard taught, counselled and performed various administrative roles until 1998, when he and Eileen accepted another post with Janz Team—this time in Kandern, Germany.
“We served with both the mission and Black Forest Academy, where I was a counsellor for students and staff,” says Dueck. “My major role was in missionary care (member care)—a ministry Eileen and I developed.”
Howard also served as associate pastor at Black Forest Christian Fellowship, and, he says, counselling has always been “at the core” of his ministry involvement.
In 2010 the Duecks returned to Canada, settling in St-Pierre-Jolys. Howard’s present role as Vice President for Human Resources at TeachBeyond, however, continues to take him around the world in a support capacity for missionaries and projects.
“My work involves visiting and supporting our workers worldwide, providing support to personnel matters and helping mobilize efforts,” he says.
Incidentally, the Duecks’ two daughters—both born in Brazil—are also Providence alumnae, and Howard continues to look back fondly on his time in Otterburne.
“The theological, biblical and professional training I received at Providence provides incredible strength for my work,” he says. “The counselling program in the mid-1980s transformed my life and has been a major source of blessing in countless other lives.”
