What's in a name?

President Dr. David Johnson started the first community chapel of the new school year with Shakespeare’s famous quote “What’s in a name?” expanding on the name, ‘Jesus’.

Students, staff and faculty from Providence University College & Seminary come together each Wednesday to worship and learn together. The theme for Community Chapel this year is ‘Journeys’. Dr. Johnson encouraged the students to reflect on their journey to Providence and the one ahead, elaborating on Hebrews 12.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12: 1-3 NIV

Dr. Johnson explained that a name accumulates meaning over time and that the writer of Hebrews in Chapter 12 was describing the meaning of ‘Jesus’ through many different words and phrases. As the name ‘Jesus’ accumulates meaning, we start to understand and see who God is as Jesus is the perfect picture of God.

So how will we walk this journey? Dr. Johnson encouraged us to focus our eyes on Jesus. Jesus needs to be the centre of our lives. Providence University College & Seminary is striving to be Christ-centred and will do this by fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
