Students to perform comedy of Shakespearean proportions

Next week, Providence University College stages its first comedy in a decade: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). This wildly amusing, six-actor extravaganza manages to cram the Bard’s entire canon of plays into less than two hours. Originally developed by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield in 1987, the play enjoyed a record-breaking nine-year run on London’s West End and for the last twenty years has been the world’s most-performed stage parody.

Director Marie Raynard says that The Complete Works distinctly compliments the talents of her actors. “These theatre students are highly energetic and skilled in physical work like dance, martial arts, improvisation, and clowning. Combine great talent with a script this funny, the result is like fireworks.” The actors seem to agree.

“This show is like nothing I’ve been part of before,” says second-year theatre major Katie Plett.

Michael Frank, a first-year student, adds that the show drives him to excel: “What I have enjoyed most is experimenting with new ways of moving, pushing myself to explore what I am capable of.” Frank, who has a black belt in Shotokan karate, plays ten different roles in the play.

The style of The Complete Works will be refreshing for those familiar with Providence productions. Actors talk directly to the audience, and they expect a response. There is even opportunity for audience members to join the action, which means that every show will be unique. “Don’t come expecting to watch a traditional Shakespeare piece,” says stage manager Madison Friesen. “Come ready to laugh and have a great time with friends!” Nimble, clever, and quick, The Complete Works proves that less can be much, much more.

Public performances begin at 7:30 p.m. nightly at Providence University College, Feb. 27 - March 1. Reserve tickets are available for $8.50 by calling 433-7488. Tickets will also be available at the door for $10.00.
