Providence celebrates class of 2017
2017-04-24

Providence celebrated its class of 2017 over a memorable few days, beginning Wednesday, April 19 with the graduation of 13 Mile Two Discipleship School students.

On Friday morning an additional 29 students from all over the world were recognized at the annual TESOL Certificate Ceremony, and in the evening the Seminary Banquet kicked off the weekend’s activities.

Graduation exercises for Providence Theological Seminary followed the next morning with the presentation of 45 degrees, certificates and diplomas. Two students—Ming Wai Chan and Glenys Wirch—received Doctor of Ministry Degrees, four earned a Master of Divinity and 28 graduated with a Master of Arts. Graduate Certificates were also presented to five students, and Diplomas in Biblical Counselling were received by six.

Notably, 17 Alberta-based students graduated with Master of Arts degrees in Counselling and Counselling psychology, and eight students completed their studies via Distance Education.

With Providence President Dr. David Johnson presiding, former provincial and federal politician Joy Smith was honoured with the Distinguished Christian Leadership Award and Jakob Lepp was named the Seminary Alumni of the Year. Smith continues her work to combat human trafficking, and Lepp serves Indigenous communities in northwest Paraguay.

Saturday night’s banquet saw attention turn to Providence University College, and after Sunday’s Baccalaureate Service the institution held its Graduation Ceremony.

Three students were presented their Master of Arts degrees—one in TESOL and two in TTSOL—and 57 received a Bachelor of Arts. Four students also earned Certificates in Biblical and Theological Studies.

Former Providence students Rolf and Angela Kruse, who have spent 20 years serving refugees and tribal peoples in East Africa, were named University College Alumni of the Year, and Dr. Daniel Falk was presented with an honorary Doctor of Ministry. Himself a former Providence graduate, Dr. Falk received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1996 and is currently Professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Pennsylvania State University.
