Dr. Daniel Falk receives honorary doctorate from Providence
Providence was proud to present an honorary doctorate to Dr. Daniel Falk on April 23 as part of its graduation exercises. Dr. Falk also addressed the Sunday afternoon gathering as a guest speaker.
A world-renowned expert in the Hebrew Bible and a leading scholar in the reconstruction, translation and study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Dr. Falk graduated from Providence with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. He then went on to complete his Master of Arts at Regent College in 1992 and, four years later, earned his Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
Dr. Falk is the author of Daily, Sabbath, and Festival Prayers in the Dead Sea Scrolls (Brill, 1998) and Parabiblical Texts: Strategies for Extending the Scriptures in the Dead Sea Scrolls (T&T Clark/Continuum, 2007), along with numerous scholarly articles. He is also co-editor of six other books, including a three-volume series on the history of penitential prayer entitled Seeking the Favor of God (SBL/Brill, 2006, 2007, 2008).
He has served on The International Team of Editors of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Editorial Board of the International Organization for Qumran Studies and the Editorial Board of the Journal for the Study of the New Testament. He is also a member of The Society of Biblical Literature and The Canadian Society of Biblical Studies.
Before being appointed to the faculty of Pennsylvania State in 2014, Dr. Falk was Professor of Ancient Judaism and Biblical Studies at the University of Oregon. Prior to that he was a Kennicott Fellow in Hebrew at the Oriental Institute at the University of Oxford.
While at Providence, Dr. Falk was involved with Prov Players, sang in the choir and was a member of Student Council. His wife, Kimberley, is also a Providence graduate and was involved with Prov Players, Student Council and the women’s volleyball team. Together they remain deeply committed to ministry in their local church and to the values of Providence.
