Prov alum earns Juno nomination
Providence alumnus Mike Janzen has been nominated for a Juno award in the Jazz Album of the Year: Solo category.
Nudging Forever, released in November 2015, “melds the richness of a 20-piece string orchestra with the spontaneity of a jazz quartet,” explains the official Juno Awards website. Winnipeg Free Press arts reporter Holly Harris has also lauded the album’s “brilliant, textual orchestrations.”
“It’s on the theme of time—chronos time and kairos time,” says Janzen in a YouTube video promoting the album. “There’s one piece called “Abundance” that just overflows. It’s almost like a cup that just keeps spilling over. It’s a sense that there’s gift around every corner. There’s this over-spilling that happens all around us. We’re just lucky to experience it.”
Janzen, who attended Providence between 1989 and 1991, will be up against Shirantha Beddage, Seamus Blake, Brandi Disterheft and Renee Rosnes at the Junos, which will take place April 2 in Ottawa.
