Dr. Wesley Hill to present “Same-Sex Attraction and Pastoral Care” seminar at Providence
As part of his March 2017 module “Friendship, Sexuality, and Community,” Dr. Wesley Hill will present a public seminar entitled “Same-Sex Attraction and Pastoral Care” on Monday, March 6 at Providence.
Pastors, church leaders and interested members of the public are welcome to attend the one-day event, and registration for the full, week-long course is now open on the Providence website.
Dr. Hill, who describes himself as gay, Christian and celibate in his book, Washed and Waiting, will emphasize three talking-points in the seminar: how gay Christians hunger for clear, biblical teaching on marriage, sexuality and family; how the loneliness of modern-day singleness is a huge challenge for those who choose to remain sexually abstinent, and how the gospel can battle the shame that so many gay believers experience.
The course, which will continue through the week for registered students, will, according to Dr. Hill’s syllabus notes, “focus on recovering rich practices of friendship and hospitality, as well discussing how such a recovery might help churches in their current debates in the area of sexuality.”
Students, he writes, will afterward “be able to evaluate the positions held by a wide range of thinkers and writers and commend a theology of friendship, hospitality and community with confidence and compassion.”
Dr. Hill is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.
