Providence welcomes provincial legislation regarding on-campus sexual violence
Providence welcomes the Manitoba government’s sexual violence legislation, tabled Wednesday at the Legislature, and will follow the guidelines laid out in Bill 15: The Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Act.
Having consulted outside experts regarding our current sexual assault policy, we look forward to bolstering our already robust set of definitions and procedures in cooperation with this legislation. We are also glad Bill 15 will be supported by the Official Opposition, which we worked with regarding similar legislation while they were in office.
Following is a statement from Providence President Dr. David Johnson:
Providence has an existing sexual assault policy that provides definition, describes consent and outlines a step-by-step process for the procedures that follow the report of an incident. We have also received an evaluation of our policy from outside experts and continue to revise our policy and procedures. We worked with the previous provincial government when it was considering similar legislation for post-secondary institutions and will work with the present government regarding Bill 15: The Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Act. We will follow the guidelines of Bill 15 and find it a helpful piece of legislation as we work to prevent sexual violence in society in general and on university campuses specifically.
