Welcome Week kicks off 2016-17 school year at Providence
2016-09-01

The 2016-17 school year is officially underway!

As of Thursday morning students have begun arriving on the Providence campus in Otterburne, Manitoba and are being greeted with the biggest Welcome Week set-up in the institution’s history.

In addition to traditional orientation activities, such as tours and information sessions, students will be able to partake in numerous free games and contests, including Giant Battle Ship, Giant Kerplunk, Bubble Soccer and Bouncy Jousting. Several faculty members will also put their comfort on the line in the dunk tank.

On Friday, following a block party, a barbecue and a flyover that will drop ping pong balls on the football field, Juno-award winning band The City Harmonic will perform a free concert in the gymnasium.

Saturday will feature Nerf battles, the Welcome Banquet and evening fireworks, and on Monday students, faculty and staff will make the short drive to Winnipeg to take in a Goldeyes baseball game.

“It feels like Christmas Eve!” says Leshia Knopf, Director of Student Development at Providence. “We have so many exciting events planned for Welcome Week and are eager to finally get the fun started.”

Classes are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, following five days of Welcome Week festivities, and faculty are enthusiastic about making use of the brand new, state-of-the art classrooms and laboratories that were completed over the summer.

“It looks like we will have more students than last year, and they will enjoy these new spaces,” says Providence President Dr. David Johnson, who also points to the school’s student leaders as difference-makers on campus in 2016-17.

“We are really excited about the coming year,” he adds. “Here we go!”
