Providence offering integrated, practical Summer TESOL program this July and August
Cathy Rust-Akinbolaji is passionate about TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
“Honestly, I love this gig,” she says. “I love that I get to do this and call it a ‘career’!”
Rust-Akinbolaji, Assistant Professor of TESOL at Providence and a former ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor in Hong Kong and Slovakia, will shortly bring that enthusiasm into Summer TESOL, which will run from July 25 to August 19 at the Otterburne campus.
She admits the program will be intensive, but adds that students can expect to emerge from the four weeks with the practical skills to achieve their goals.
“We do our best to make this as practical as possible,” she explains. “If someone is hoping to work with a certain people group or use their skills for something in particular, we try to weave in case studies and ideas that fit.”
She also points out that Summer TESOL is more integrated than the year-long curriculum, as the rigorous nature of the program requires that every course includes elements of language and teaching study.
“It’s very intensive,” she says. “You get such an integrated view of how language works.”
According to previous students, one of the highlights of Summer TESOL is the Hospitality Corner, set up by Dr. Elfrieda Lepp-Kaethler, Assistant Professor of TESOL at Providence.
Lepp-Kaethler has extensive teaching experience in Second Language Acquisition, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics and Language Curriculum Development, among numerous other fields, but she is also deliberate about creating a welcoming space for students, who appreciate the throw pillows, fruit, coffee and tea of the Hospitality Corner.
“What we’ve found,” says Rust-Akinbolaji, “is that the hospitality aspect of the program has made a lasting impression.”
As has Rust-Akinbolaji, herself.
A self-described “enthusiast,” she insists she’ll dance on a table in order to keep her students’ attention, and she takes considerable pride in accompanying her students through important times in their lives.
“I love getting to teach at these moments in their journeys,” she says. “Either they’re transferring from high school to a career or from a career to another career. It’s so pivotal. Being a part of that is awesome.”
Providence is accredited by Languages Canada.
