A prayer for the new year

Our father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us today our daily bread
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us
Lead us not into temptation
Deliver us from evil.

The simplest things are often the most profound. Jesus' point in the introduction to this prayer is that we don't need a lot of words when we pray. A few will do. There are about fifty in this model prayer. In these few words our Lord taught us all that we should pray for, God to be glorified, God's kingdom to come, God's will to be done, our daily needs (not tomorrow's!), forgiveness, holiness, and protection from evil.

Pretty simple. Pretty profound. This a great prayer for the new year. What more could we ask for 2014? First we prioritize God and God's will, not our own. Second we ask for four things for ourselves, the most important things, the things we cannot achieve without God's help. First today’s provision, which implies the ability to trust God for tomorrow. Second, forgiveness which implies the recognition of our sin and our inability to make ourselves right with God. Third, the ability to resist our own wicked tendencies. And fourth, protection from the evil inherent in the world.

That's it. That's all we need. Pretty simple. Pretty profound. A prayer for the new year.
