Alumni enjoy Athletics Homecoming events
Nearly 70 Providence alumni relived their glory days as student athletes when the Otterburne campus welcomed them back for the Athletics department’s Homecoming events in late November.
On Saturday, November 21 a contingent 26 former volleyball players—some of whom hadn’t stepped on a court in more than a decade—contested a series of exhibition matches, enjoyed pizza for dinner, and stayed to watch the current Pilots take on provincial rivals Canadian Mennonite University. (Both the men’s and women’s teams prevailed 3-0.)
The format was repeated a week later with 40 basketball alumni, and given the volume of participation representing numerous eras two men’s games had to be scheduled. The Pilots men then beat CMU while the women were defeated by the visiting Blazers.
“For the first year of trying this format we were thrilled with the response,” remarked Providence Director of Athletics Scott Masterson, who was excited to reconnect alumni with the school’s sports programs. “It was great to see so many familiar faces and the feedback was very positive. Many alumni said they were already looking forward to next year’s events.”
By all accounts the former players were excited to return to Providence, reminisce about times gone by, and evaluate the various changes on campus.
Added Masterson: “Another great part of these events was seeing the spouses and kids that are now part of all our lives. It was great to see the next generation running around and playing in the gym.”
Next year’s Homecoming dates will be finalized during the summer so as to align with the provincial schedule, and a soccer event will likely be included as well.
