July 2012
Dear Providence University College Alumni/ae:
I have been serving the Lord at Providence now for twenty-two years. It is hard to believe that time has passed so quickly. Now I am writing this note as interim President, taking over for Dr Konkel. Dr Konkel has retired and will move to Ontario by summer’s end.
One of the things we have learned over the years is that the test of our education lies in the success of our graduates. It is one thing to design an interesting curriculum. It is quite another to test what you have learned in the furnace of life and ministry. It is the faculty’s goal to begin to systematically ask for feedback from our alumni/ae concerning the effectiveness of their Providence education.
Our alumni and alumnae form the outcome of our mission to teach people to think, live, and serve as Christians in church and society. I want to thank you for choosing to study at Providence however many years ago it has been. I am sure you also want to thank those people who made it possible for you to attend. We sometimes think that the amount we paid in tuition was the cost of our education. But that is not true. Tuition covers only a portion of the amount it takes to provide quality university education. As you know, the provincial government supplies Providence only a portion of what it provides public universities. We all need to thank God for the provision that made your education possible.
Perhaps you are in a position to help provide a Christ-centred university education to the present group of students. Our goal is to make a Providence education more accessible, so this year we have increased by $100,000 the amount we will provide to students in the form of scholarships and bursaries.
Whether you can give a little or a lot, I encourage you to invest in Providence students. The Providence Board, employees, and general donors provide money for the general fund. Alumni donations are used to provide scholarships to make Christ-centred higher education more accessible to students.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Sincerely,
Dave
