Providence Wins Home Opener in Convincing Fashion

Lady Freemen Soccer team defeats CMU 5-0

The Lady Freemen came into today’s game with questions circling about if they could compete without All-American Ruth Maddever in the line-up. They left the game with a performance that eliminated any doubts.

The match started with the Blazers coming out hard and gaining control of the game, as the Lady Freemen struggled to get organized. However, it was Providence who was able to strike first as Alanna Giesbrecht received a pass from Melanie Warkentine and put a curving shot just inside the far post. The goal seemed to give the Lady Freemen the confidence they were missing as they started to regain control of the game. Providence found the net again shortly after as Dana Van Dijk put in a header off a cross into the penalty area. Van Dijk then scored her second goal of the night late in the half to put the Lady Freemen up 3-0 at halftime.

Providence came out with intensity to start the second half and continued to control the play up the field. Their strong play was rewarded once again as Freshman Allison Dueck converted a pass from Michelle Scully to put the Lady Freemen up by four. Dueck followed that by putting away her second of the night after she received a long ball from defender Cara Scully, got around a CMU defender, and rippled the back of the net. Dueck’s goal finished the scoring, and capped off a 5-0 Lady Freemen victory.

Coach Janke felt that the Lady Freemen fought to a well-deserved victory, and was pleased with the way her team regrouped after a slow start to the game.

“I was worried early in the first half because CMU started the game with more control than I had anticipated they would. But we were able to work out our problems and play our game midway through the half.” She commented. “Seeing the girls being able to take control of the game and play with a high intensity leaves me very confident in the team going forward.”

The women’s and men’s soccer squads head down to Kansas this weekend to face Manhattan Christian College on Friday. The squads then face Faith Baptist Bible College on Saturday before heading back home.
