Junior Pilots Impress at Volleyball Nationals
The Junior Pilots club volleyball teams did Providence proud at last month’s national tournament in Calgary.
At the completion of the event, held over Victoria Day weekend, the five sides had combined to compile a record of 23 wins and 14 losses, and the 16U Girls had advanced as far as the Tier-1 final in Division 4.
The 15U Girls impressed as well, coming fifth out of 30 teams in Division 3, and the 17U Girls also finished fifth in their section after winning each of their first three matches.
Competing in Division 2, the 16U Boys won four matches and lost just twice before going out of the competition to eventual champions Niagara Rapids. The 15U Boys, finally, played in the ultra-competitive Division 1, where they lost in the quarter-finals to seal a fifth-place finish.
“Overall, it was a great showing,” remarked Club Program Director Kyle Guenther. “I was very impressed by the results of all five of our teams in Calgary. I could even say each team met or exceeded expectations.”
More than 800 teams and 10,000 athletes took part in the tournament, which was watched by 15,000 spectators.
Matches featuring Canada’s men’s and women’s national teams highlighted the weekend’s festivities.
