The ceremony included a video tribute that consisted of a few players that Martin had an impact on over the years, some fellow coaches who Martin has had success against, and special appearances by Dan Wood, executive director of the NCCAA and his lovely wife, Heather Ward. Martin then came up and gave an inspirational sendoff message. Coach Ward gave the following words and advise to the Providence community:
“Consider coaching. Coaching is a great way to give back to the sport that you love. It is challenging and will help you grow as a person. It is also a great way to make lasting relationships and one of the best ways there is to make a positive impact in other people’s lives. Because of that it is very rewarding. There is no better way to make a positive impact in people’s lives.”
“Understand how special Providence athletics is. Your Providence athletics experience will change you. It will make you a better player and a better person. The longer you are involved the deeper will be the change.”
“Have fun and help those around you have fun. That is the essence of being a team player.”
Coach Martin Ward walked off the stage to a very well deserved standing ovation from everyone in the room.
