Pilots Women’s Basketball Team Closes out MCAC Season

This past weekend, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference held it’s Championships at Canadian Mennonite University. The semi-finals were on Saturday, which had Providence matched up against the host school, CMU Blazers.

The Providence University College Pilots Women’s Basketball team entered the MCAC Championship weekend as the third seed. CMU had won three of the five meetings this season, including the last two. The Blazers came out firing on all cylinders in this semi-final match up. The Pilots couldn’t contain the CMU offense and were unable to generate anything themselves. Despite being down 24-11 after the first quarter, Providence didn’t go down without a fight. Contesting every shot, going for every loose ball, and playing hardnosed basketball brought three exciting quarters. The Pilots could not close the gap however. The Blazers came out on top 66-42 to clinch their spot in the MCAC finals and to end the hopes of the Pilots.

Courtney Engel had 12 points to lead the Pilots in the semi-final game. She added 5 rebounds and 3 steals which earned her the Player of the Game award from Providence. Megan Riediger added a 10 point, 4 rebound performance of her own for the Pilots.

“We didn't fare as well as I would have liked in the playoffs this year,” Head Coach Joel Coursey commented after the loss. “It was a bad game for us, shots weren't falling and we just couldn't hold onto the ball. CMU played a great game and executed their game plan very well against us, and had a great shot at the championship.”

“The MCAC season is a long grueling season of playing each team 5 times,” Coursey continues about their play this season. “My girls had a fantastic start to the season in the number 1 spot for about two months. I am proud of the accomplishment this team made going from 1 win last year to 8 this year. The league was very competitive and we were right in the mix all year. I am excited to see what this team will do next season and the years to come.”

“Fortunately for us, we have three more weeks of basketball as we prepare for NCCAA regionals and ACCA nationals.”
