Coach Calla Moving On

Head Coach for Women’s Soccer, Giancarlo (Dante) Calla, has announced that he is stepping down after a highly successful coaching term at Providence University College. Since the fall of 2011 Coach Calla has lead his team to 3 MCAC Championships, 2 NCCAA Regional Championships, three 3rd place finishes at NCCAA Nationals and an overall win-loss record of 50-14-4. He received coaching honors as the NCCAA North Central Region Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year and MCAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

“Dante has brought our women’s soccer program to the next level in the four years he has been coach,” says Director of Athletics, Scott Masterson. “He has a passion for the game of soccer, for coaching, and for pushing his players to be their absolute best. He was a great recruiter and understood the game very well. We are lucky to have had him as a coach here for as long we did and the impact he has had on the program will last well into the future.”

“It is a very bitter sweet feeling. I have always tried to avoid this day and as I look back I am so thankful for all the opportunities and experiences that Providence has given me,” reflects Coach Calla. “When I do, I only smile. As a player, assistant coach and head coach, I have grown so much and feel grateful to have been blessed with the Providence experience.”

“I was determined to build a strong program, with character players and I feel that we accomplished that. We won 5 regular season championships, 5 tournament championships, finished 3rd three straight years at Nationals and accumulated a record of 50-14-4. But, ultimately, the thing I will miss the most are the relationships that I’ve made. I can’t thank my players enough. Coaching would have never been as fun or fulfilling without them.”

“I would like to thank Scott Masterson for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to live out my dream. He has always allowed me to build the program my way and has always been supportive. I would like to thank Martin Ward as he has been a great friend and mentor and has taught me more about being the best I can be at life, rather than soccer. I want to thank Joel Janke for being the best assistant coach anyone can ask for. He has always been committed and has pushed me to be the best coach and person I can be. Our success would have never been possible without him. Lastly, I want to thank my wife. She has sacrificed a lot over the last 9 years (as a player and coach) and she has always supported me. Without her love and friendship, I wouldn't be where I am.”

Providence Athletics wishes Coach Calla all the best and we know that he will continue to be successful as he brings his passion and enthusiasm into all his endeavors.
