Home Opener vs Wesmen
2014-11-04

The Pilots took to the court Wednesday night in their home opener against the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen. The Pilots were looking to bounce back after falling to Turtle Mountain Community College on the road 67-56. Providence got out to an early lead, but allowed the Wesmen to stay within 10 to end the first quarter. The Pilots turned up the defense intensity and shut down the Wesmen, holding them to 1 point in the second quarter. Going into the half, the Pilots lead 39-12. The defense carried the Pilots through the second half as they held the Wesmen to 5 points in the third and 6 in the fourth quarter. Providence was never really challenged in this game as they won their home opener 73-23. This is only the third win against the College Wesmen in team history. Leading the way for the Pilots was Amber Harms with 17 points and 5 rebounds, Crystal Harms with 12 points and 7 rebounds, Genadyne Charr with 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.

The men’s game was a bit more exciting showing both teams to be very evenly matched. The game went back and forth for the first half with the Wesmen going into the locker room with a 3 point lead 30-27. In the 3rd quarter the Pilots got down by as much as 10 points but rallied back to take the lead which was sparked by a Rig Desorvil Dunk. The 4th quarter was  a back and forth affair with the Pilots making some clutch buckets to keep a slim lead and hold on for the victory 72-67. This marks the first win for the Pilots over the college Wesmen since they entered MCAC. Coach Gryba had this to say after the game, “We played really sloppy but executed down the stretch to earn the win.  We need to limit our turnovers and play more consistent to continue to be successful.” Leading for the Pilots was Rig Desorvil with 27 points and 6 rebounds, Raymond Hiebert with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
