Pilots Take Part in Briercrest Invitational

Fresh off winning their home Invitational, the Providence Women’s Volleyball team traveled to Caronport, Saskatchewan where they took part in the Briercrest Invitational tournament this past weekend.

The weekend started with the biggest test the Pilots will see all season, the University of Regina Cougars. The Cougars, who finished 6th overall last year in the CIS, would impose their game on the Pilots from the start. Despite being outsized and outplayed in the first two sets, the Pilots would not go down without a fight. Providence put together their best set of volleyball of the year and took the set from the Cougars. Regina took the fourth set convincingly and the match 3 sets to 1.
Taking the momentum from their great play against U of R, the Pilots swept the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in three sets on Friday night.

A tougher test on Saturday morning had the Pilots set up against the Lakeland College Rustlers. Providence came out swinging in this contest and only dropped a set against the Rustlers on route to a four set victory.

The final match of the weekend for the Pilots was against the host Briercrest. A very strong opponent and having played three matches already in the weekend made for tough conditions for the Pilots. After dropping the first two sets, the Providence women weren’t ready to give up without a fight. A great start to the third set had Briercrest call a time out being down 7-0. The set was back and forth from that point until the Pilots were up 24-19. With most people getting ready for a fourth set, Briercrest went on a huge serving run to tie the set and eventually win it 26-24. Stunning upset sent the Pilots home with a 2 and 2 record.

Despite the disappointing loss in the final set of the weekend, Assistant Coach Kyle Guenther was very pleased with his team’s play during the weekend. “I thought our team played very well all weekend. The U of R game was simply fun to watch as our girls held their own against a team of that caliber. We found ways to win our next two matches with not playing our best volleyball at times which was great to see. The final match, we could tell it was a long weekend for everyone and we just got a bit tired at the end. Overall, lots of positives to take away from this tournament.”
