Providence Athletics Name Change Takes Flight

For over twenty years, the Aviation program at Providence University College has played a significant part in the identity of the institution. We believe the Athletics program at Providence shares a similar impact, which is why we are very excited to announce our decision to change our team name to the Providence Pilots.

There has been a buzz around the Providence community for about a year after word had gotten out that the Athletics department would be going forward with a new name. Students, staff, faculty, and friends of Providence have been waiting in anticipation for this name to be released. The Athletics department couldn’t be more thrilled to announce the Pilots name.

“I have been looking forward to the release of our new name and logo for quite a while. It will hopefully add a lot of excitement and a new sense of identity for us as we get ready to start another great year at Providence.” says Scott Masterson, Director of Athletics at Providence.

There was a growing consensus that the former athletics team name, “Freemen”, needed to be updated to something more gender neutral, but at the same time depicting a clearer image, or persona, to identify with. The name Pilots came to mind as Providence offers an excellent aviation program for students looking to pursue careers in the aviation industry, ranging anywhere from commercial pilots, to mission agency support.

Ever since the establishment of the program in 1975, the athletics department at Providence has seen continuous growth in terms of the number of varsity teams, staffing, athletes, competitiveness, and regional and national results. Providence offers varsity sports in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, futsol and men’s golf.

In the 2012-13 season, Providence teams brought home 4 MCAC Championships and 3 NCCAA Regional Championships. It also boasts the third largest club volleyball program in Manitoba and organizes six weeks of summer sports camps.

Manitobans already have the Jets and the Blue Bombers, and Providence is very excited to add the Providence Pilots to a list of local sports teams representing the celebrated aviation industry in Manitoba.
