Osadchuk With a Late Goal, Downs Rebels

As their season reaches the half way point, both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from Providence University College sit atop the standings in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. This past weekend saw a home and home between the men’s team from Providence against St. Boniface University College. The women’s team also visited Red River on Saturday afternoon.
On the men’s side, Providence took advantage of playing at home on Saturday with a 6-2 route of visiting St. Boniface. Norvin Campos exploded for 4 goals while Brendan Wiens and Arvid Neufeld each added a goal of their own.
St. Boniface answered back on Sunday however. In a tight affair, Providence failed to get comfortable while enduring tough field conditions. St. Boniface snuck by with a 1-0 victory. “St. Boniface is a tremendously talented but volatile team and we saw both aspects of that this weekend. On our field, the game was fairly even until they ran into red card trouble and then we were able to create openings and move the ball around nicely,” Coach Martin Ward explains. “Their field the next day was so hard and bumpy it was very difficult to control the ball or run and pass properly. It was a close game but not pretty soccer. We did not adjust to the conditions or their style of play until the last 15 minutes and we could not break through. We need to learn from this game and hopefully it will make us a better team come playoff time.”
The women remain perfect in the MCAC after a 2-1 victory over the Red River Rebels on Saturday. Kate Osadchuk scored both goals for Providence as she ties teammate Brianna Plett for the league lead in goals scored. Head coach Giancarlo Calla liked how his team performed this weekend. “I thought we tried to do the things we’ve worked on in practice. With some unfortunate calls, we had to adjust and find a way to win and we did! These girls have a real fighting spirit and I am very excited in the direction we are going.”
