Back to Back Wins
2014-02-19
With MCAC playoffs just around the corner, the pressure was on this weekend. Both the Men’s volleyball and Men’s basketball teams needed one win in two games this weekend to make the playoffs. Both teams did better than that, winning in each of their matches.

The Men’s basketball team traveled down to Bemidji, MN this weekend to take on the last place Oak Hills Wolf Pack. The Wolf Pack has not secured a victory this season but was still in the running for the final playoff spot, with both Providence and CMU. Providence needed just one win to land them in the playoffs, but with two wins, they would secure 3rd place. The Pilots have been playing some good basketball in the month of February, and it continued this weekend. Providence swept the Wolf Pack winning convincingly on Friday night 82-52 and again on Saturday afternoon 86-59. Following the weekend’s games, the Pilots beat Saint-Boniface 66-50 in an exhibition game. Providence has one regular season game left, and it is against Red River this Saturday evening in Winnipeg. The results of the game will not affect the standings for Providence.

The Women’s basketball team had one game at home this weekend against Red River College. The Pilots who have not come up with a win against the Rebels were looking for their first MCAC victory of the season. Providence started the game slow and was down 25 points at half time. The Pilots played much better, beating the Rebels by 4 in the second half. Providence was unable to cut Red River’s lead and lost the game 70-49. Key players for the Pilots were, Breanne Nichol with 11 points, Karmealia Turner with 6 points, and 8 rebounds, and Elena Rempel with 15 points, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds. On Tuesday night, Breanne Nichol lead the Pilots to an exhibition win over Saint-Boniface 55-28, with an impressive 6 three’s good for 19 points on the night. This win will end the Pilots losing streak and hopefully build some momentum heading towards the NCCAA region playoffs.
