Pilots vs Lions
2014-01-29

Providence Pilots basketball teams played host to Trinity Bible College Lions from Ellendale North Dakota this past weekend in back to back games. Trinity is one of three teams that Providence plays in the NCCAA North Central Region. Trinity is currently ranked #2 in the region for men’s basketball and #1 for women’s basketball.

Friday’s women’s game was back and forth showing two lead changes and five ties. The Lions would hold their lead in the final minutes and win the game 64-55. The Pilots played well against the top team in their division, holding them to 64 points. Coach Coursey had these words after the game, “Trinity is a strong team and we know that there is no room for mistakes when we play them. Tonight’s game was a big improvement but we have to cut down our turnovers. If we take care of the basketball we can stay with any team in the region.” Key players for Providence were, Breanne Nichol with 7 points and 4 steals, Karmealia Turner with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals, and Crystal Harms with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 1 block.

The men’s game was neck and neck to the final minutes. Providence held the lead for much of the game but was unable to put the game away. Trinity clawed back to win the game 69-61. Key players for the Pilots were Nate Warburton with 12 points and 8 blocks, and Jonathan Thompson with 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 assists. Saturday’s games were disappointing for both teams. The women lost 61-38 after cutting the lead to 1 with 10 minutes left. The men were unable to generate any offense in the second half and lost 64-37. Key players for both teams were Crystal Harms with 8 points, 12 rebounds, and Jonathan Thompson with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
