With another three wins apiece the Providence Pilots women’s and men’s basketball teams padded their leads atop the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings in Minneapolis MN last weekend.

First facing Faith Baptist Bible Institute, both Pilots squads put on a show. Glenboro’s Joanne Schwarz scored 17 points in a 79-52 victory for the women, and first-year post Esther Ruchegeza added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. In men’s action, Tulsa OK’s Kendall Perpall continued his strong play, scoring a game-high 35 points in the men’s 88-73 triumph that also saw Christ Dick contribute 18 points and 10 rebounds.

In their second and third games of the weekend road-trip the Pilots played back-to-back against Association Free Lutheran Bible School. Capitalizing on their opponents’ mistakes, the women dominated AFLBS, winning 89-43 and 80-46. Taylor Goodbrandson recorded 33 points over the two games and Kiara Foster chipped in with 28.

The men, meanwhile, posted 93-81 and 105-70 wins, and Perpall again led the way with a combined 43 points and 24 rebounds. Zach Feakes contributed a further 34 points and 14 rebounds.

“We are starting to play better basketball,” analyzed women’s head coach Joel Coursey, whose team is now 7-0 in NIAC play. “We are creating chemistry on the floor, which is leading to a higher shooting percentage and more shot attempts. I’m happy to say we’re heading in the right direction at the Christmas break.”

The Pilots men are also first in the NIAC with a record of 6-1.
