Pilots women’s team make history
2017-11-22

by Naaman Sturrup

Last week, as the Providence Pilots soccer teams travelled to the National Christian College Athletic Association’s championships games, both teams gave valiant efforts in split results.

In women’s action, the Pilots came out firing against Grace Bible College in their semi-final, beating them 2-0, with star forward Julika Phommarath netting the brace. In the final, the game seemed to be a deadlock as both teams exhibited stellar defense. However, a late free kick gave Bob Jones University the win over the Pilots. This is the first time that the Women Pilots have made an NCCAA Final game.

After the game, several team leaders gathered to reminisce on their stellar season and journey to Nationals. Midfielder Doro Schulz states “despite losing in the finals, we made history; and we not only made history, but we also gained friends and family.” Senior goalkeeper Kiran Hodges exclaims, “I am incredibly proud of this team! They have such heart and courage, it’s inspiring.”

Team manager Serena Stan states, “the focus on being a family and bettering ourselves and each other was present this past week.”

In the men’s game, the Pilots won a decisive 2-1 victory over the Kentucky Christian University in their first game.

The Pilots played their toughest match yet against Pensacola Christian College, as this intense game came down to a questionable Pensacola penalty kick in the 89th minute, which was converted, and the Pilots lost 1-2. Juan Lafaurie led the way with two goals. Head coach Joseph Passi praised his team’s efforts to reach the NCCAA championship games, and is looking forward to next year’s follow up. “We’ll be back next year with even more determination.”

Kiran Hodges was named Goalie of the tournament, and both her and Romaine Francis made the NCCAA All-American teams.
