Providence volleyball teams maintain perfect start to season
2017-11-14

Following victories over the Red River College Rebels and Les Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface last Thursday and Friday, the Providence Pilots men’s and women’s volleyball teams are each a perfect 4-0 to start their respective Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference campaigns.

On Thursday in Otterburne the Pilots men made quick work of Red River, prevailing 25-12, 25-20, 25-11. A day later they again won in straight sets, beating USB 25-22, 25-13, 25-21. Matt Friesen executed 22 kills and made 13 digs over the two matches while Lucas Pappel contributed 57 assists.

“We have been working on certain aspects of our defensive game lately and it was apparent to me that in Thursday’s match the guys had taken it to heart,” remarked head coach Scott Masterson. “On Friday we were very pleased to win in three sets as USB is a dangerous team that can get on a roll if given the opportunity."

The Pilots will now enjoy an off week before hosting the Assiniboine Community College Cougars in a back-to-back series November 24-25.

The Providence women also overcame Red River and USB last week, winning 3-1 on Thursday and 3-0 on Friday. Having arrived in Greenville SC on Tuesday for the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship they’ll open their round robin schedule on Thursday with matches against Bob Jones University and Kentucky Christian University. All matches from South Carolina will be live-streamed.

After four MCAC matches apiece both Pilots volleyball teams are 4-0 to start the season and in first place in the province.

In basketball the Pilots men hosted Bemidji MN’s Oak Hills Christian College last weekend, winning 97-90 on Friday and losing 75-61 on Saturday. Both they and the women’s squad will resume MCAC play on Friday against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers in Winnipeg before welcoming the Blazers to Otterburne on Saturday.
