With outstanding performances in Dubuque IA last weekend the Providence Pilots soccer teams won a pair of National Christian College Athletic Association North Region championships.

In women’s action, the Pilots defeated semi-final opponents Faith Baptist Bible College 4-1 on Saturday—star forward Julika Phommarath netting a brace. A day later, against Maranatha Baptist University in the regional final, Providence allowed an early goal but went on to dominate possession throughout the match. With 15 seconds remaining in stoppage time, Phommarath received Chelsea Engel’s chipped pass and equalized. Then, five minutes into extra time, Courtney Engel headed what proved to be the championship-winning goal.

“As a team, our season has been full of come-backs and needing to fight our way back into the lead,” analyzed Phommarath. “This regional final showed that same pattern, which makes this victory even more exciting for us.”

“We had worked so hard all season for this moment and for each other,” added teammate Amelia Reimer. “So when we won, it was incredible!”

Both men’s matches were nail-biters. Against Moody Bible Institute in the semi-final the Pilots trailed 2-1 with just four minutes to play. But Herby Magny stepped up and struck to the bottom left-hand side of the goal to equalize, and Romaine Francis chipped the goalkeeper to win the match in extra time. In the final against Maranatha, Francis’ 20th-minute tally was the difference as Providence shut up shop defensively.

Head coach Joey Passi was ecstatic, already anticipating an exciting National Championship in Greenville SC. “Hats off to the boys, who showed some serious guts to overcome the weekend,” he said.

The NCCAA National Championship begins November 15.
