The Providence Pilots soccer teams travelled to Minneapolis MN last weekend to compete in their first National Christian College Athletic Association matches of the season.

The Pilots had a strong opening against Crown College, with both teams producing wins. In women’s action, the Providence flexed its muscles against Crown, showing superior offense and defense and winning 5-3. Standout first-year striker Zoe Kriznic continued her goal-scoring dominance with a quartet of goals. On the men’s side the Pilots also dominated Crown, controlling the tempo and flow en route to a 5-0 triumph. Sophomore Jonathan Fulford netted a brace, while Jorge Alva, Romaine Francis, and Juan Laufarie each found the back of the net as well

Providence found tougher competition against North Central University the following day, and both the women and men lost to the tournament hosts. The women’s team, fighting off fatigue and playing in the rain, found the game to be an uphill battle. Though the encounter was physical and featured questionable refereeing decisions, the Pilots gave their all but went on to lose 3-1. NCU also proved a tough test for the men, establishing their speed and physicality from the opening kick-off. They scored three goals in the opening 10 minutes, and while the Pilots fought back it was the hosts who prevailed 4-3.

Despite the split results women’s coach Tory Walker and men’s coach Joey Passi both praised the performances of their teams. Next up for the women and men is a match at Red River College on October 15 and a home game against Les Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface the following afternoon.
