Pilots volleyball teams travel to Alberta for preseason tournament
by Naaman Sturrup
The Providence Pilots volleyball teams travelled to Red Deer, AB last weekend for a tournament September 29-30.
After losing their first match to Ambrose University, the Pilots women rebounded with a four-sets win over Olds College. The next day they again opened with a loss—this time to hosts Red Deer College—before completing their schedule with a straight sets win over SAIT.
Left side Shayna Staerk led the way with 39 kills and 29 digs while first-year student-athlete LaDawn Friesen chipped in with 29 kills and 19 digs.
Head coach Kyle Guenther stated that although his team did not achieve the results they wanted their level of play continues to improve.
“Our last match against SAIT is where it all came together,” he said. “We played our highest-quality match of the year and controlled play from start to finish.”
In men’s action the Pilots got off to an impressive start, defeating College of the Rockies in four sets, before losing to Ambrose, Red Deer and SAIT.
Star setter Lucas Pappel had an impressive weekend with 114 assists over the four matches while Matt Friesen produced 48 kills and 32 digs.
Despite winning just a single match head coach Scott Masterson was upbeat about his team’s overall performance, particularly the close, five-set defeat to SAIT.
“We felt like we played well and showed that we are capable of competing with this level of competition,” he said. ““The teams we played against this weekend will end up being some of the best in the country, so we felt like we played well and showed we are able to compete with that level of competition.”
