Pilots alumni soccer matches attract more than 40 former students
2017-09-06

More than 40 former Providence students and their families returned to the Otterburne, Manitoba campus for Sunday’s alumni soccer matches.

Part of the institution’s Welcome Week festivities, the matches both reconnected past Pilots players and allowed the coaches to get one more look at their current women’s and men’s teams before the start of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season this weekend.

“It was great for us as coaches to see our teams are at,” remarked Tory Walker, head coach of the Providence Pilots women’s soccer team. “Both the women and men played against some of the best alumni to ever represent our university.”

Following a 1-0 win for the Pilots alumni in the women’s match it looked as though the current men’s team would exact a measure of revenge when they went into the final minutes of their match leading 2-1. But alumnus Troy Lydiate—known to many by his stage name “Scribe”—had other ideas, scoring a highlight-reel goal from a set piece that restored level terms and rounded out the scoring.

Just a few hours later he opened the Welcome Week Kick-Off Concert to an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 450 people.

“We were very pleased with the turnout and support from our alumni,” said Walker, adding, “We hope this can be an event that will continue to grow each year.
