Providence return for volleyball player Matthew Friesen
Matthew Friesen is coming back to where his college volleyball career began.
A Varsity High School Provincial MVP with Grunthal’s Green Valley Pirates, Friesen joined Providence after graduation and was the Pilots Male Rookie of the Year in 2015.
A year later he won the corresponding award at Niagara College, having made the switch to the Welland, Ontario campus. In 2017-18 the decorated left side will be back in the blue and white of the Pilots.
“I’m excited to return to Providence to finish off where I started,” he says. “I’m looking forward to competing in a competitive environment and coming back to a solid volleyball program.
Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference champions in 2016, the Pilots bowed out at the semi-final round of the 2017 play-offs. Head coach Scott Masterson is keen to contend once again this coming season and sees Friesen as an important part of his plans.
“I am very excited to have Matt coming back to the program,” he says. “He has gained valuable volleyball and life experience these last two years and will be able to come in and be a leader on the team. He is an excellent all-around player and will be a significant asset for us.”
