Men’s volleyball wins 4th consecutive game against St. Boniface in 3 straight sets

#2 Paul Warkentin led the attack in the win against CUSB

Providence’s men’s volleyball squad finished their MCAC exhibition play Wednesday night when they travelled to Winnipeg to face the St. Boniface Voyageurs. The Freemen entered the game looking to win their fourth of four meetings against the Voyageurs this season, and were able to accomplish that with a dominating three set (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) performance.

The Freemen utilized their bench throughout the game, as they worked to prepared all of their players for the tough upcoming NIVC half of their schedule. Providence came out on fire in the first set and, behind thunderous serving from captain Paul Warkentin (5 aces, 4 digs), were able to take it easily 25-17.

Providence then continued their dominance in the next set as they continued to control the play. Sophomore Josh Friesen (6 kills, 2 stuff blocks) stepped up big in the middle, and the Freemen took the set 25-20. The final set then featured more of the same, as the Freemen continued to dominate and took the set 25-20 to end the match quickly.

Freemen coach Jason Peters saw the game and his team’s play as a good segue into the upcoming weekend tournament.

“We played pretty good ball tonight,” Coach Peters commented. “Our serving, while a bit inconsistent at times, was effective and caused real problems for CUSB tonight. After this, we are excited to play our first league matches this weekend at NDSU.”

Notes: Freshman Kevin Hildebrand had an outstanding offensive game with 5 aces and 11 kills…the Freemen travel to North Dakota this weekend to compete in their first American tournament of the year at the NDSU Open.
