Providence club volleyball teams impress at Provincial Championships
Nine Providence teams participated in the recent Volleyball Manitoba Provincial Championships, held in Brandon, Selkirk, Steinbach, and Winnipeg.
Most of them, points out club coordinator Kyle Guenther, who is also the varsity women’s volleyball coach at Providence, matched or surpassed their pre-tournament ranking, and each team represented Providence and the Junior Pilots program with distinction.
“Beyond the results, I was so happy to see these athletes enjoying the sport and putting all of their hard work from the season on display,” he says. “I could not be more proud of how our teams represented our club these past few weekends.”
Coached by Joe Thiessen, Chris Koop, and Michelle Sawatzky-Koop, the 14U Junior Pilots Boys won a Provincial Championship after a straight-sets victory over the Winman Spartans in the final at Winnipeg’ Maples Collegiate.
The 16U Boys also impressed, finishing third in their category, and both the 17U Boys and 18U Girls wound up fourth in their competitions.
Rounding out the results was a seventh-place finish by the 13U Girls, a 10th-place showing by the 14U Girls, a fifth-place achievement by the 15U Boys, a ninth-place display by the 15U Girls, and an eighth-place feat by the 16U Girls.
Next up for many of the squads are their respective National Championships.
“We are sending seven of the teams to Nationals in the coming weeks in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg, says Guenther. “I look forward to hearing more great stories from these trips as our teams compete on the national stage.”
