Promising women’s basketball recruit signs for Providence
This year’s South East Basketball League MVP will be a Providence Pilot next season.
Alena Collier, who starred for the College Lorette Collegiate Scorpions in Grades 10, 11, and 12, will join a strong group of returning players as a guard with the women’s basketball team.
“I am excited to add Alena to our team,” remarked head coach Joel Coursey. “Alena is a strong athlete with a good work ethic, and I think she will be able to contribute to our team with her speed and athleticism.”
Collier was named MVP of several tournaments in 2015-16, including the Transcona Optimist Classic, and averaged 26 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals per game over the course of the campaign.
A highlight of her Grade 12 year was a 34-point outing against Westgate Mennonite Collegiate. As a Grade 11 student-athlete she and her Scorpions teammates finished third at Provincials.
Coursey points out that Collier will be part of a “well-established” group that includes nine returnees. The Pilots are coming off a season in which they reached the semi-finals of both the MCAC (Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference) play-offs and NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Conference) regional tournament, and they’ll be looking to take the next step in 2016-17.
The upcoming regular season is set to begin October 21, and the Pilots schedule includes trips to Chicago IL, Dubuque IA, Minneapolis MN, and Watertown WI.
