Lady Freemen have late comeback attempt fall short in 49-41 loss to Red River College

After registering their first victory of the season the Lady Freemen were hoping to continue their winning ways Friday against the Red River College Rebels. However, Providence fall behind early, and couldn’t cap off a late-game comeback as they fell to the Rebels 49-41.

The Rebels came out and played with an intensity that the Lady Freemen could not match early on, and it led to several sloppy first quarter turnovers from Providence. The Lady Freemen also allowed the Rebels to get too many offensive rebounds in the first half and it led to them heading into the locker room with a hefty task on their hands.

However, the Lady Freemen found a new life in the second half, and behind the leadership of senior Jill Reimer (10 pts, 4 assts, 4 rebs, 4 blks) the squad started to play a more calmed and unified game. The Freemen also focused on playing a better team defense for the third quarter, and it led to a tightly contested and close third quarter, but by the quarter’s end the Lady Freemen still found themselves 17 points behind their Red River counterparts.

But the fourth quarter presented yet another opportunity for the Lady Freemen, and, behind another late-game offensive awakening from freshman Melanie Warkentine (13 pts, 7 assts, 5 rebs, 4 stls), Providence started to make their move. Freshman Charlotte Dean (8 pts, 6 rebs) began dominating the post, and the Lady Freemen were able to cut the Rebels’ lead to 8. But Providence ran out of time, and Red River was able to hold on for a 49-41 win.

Freemen assistant coach Graham Bodnar filled in for coach Patti Parker Friday night, and was impressed with his team’s ability to refocus following a poor start to the game.

“We gave up offensive rebounds and turnovers early leading to easy Red River points,” Bodnar commented. “But we were able to stay in the game because of our solid team defense and by contesting every shot.

Notes: Freshman point guard Sonia Radi sat out the game with an ankle injury.

The Lady Freemn’s next game is Wednesday night as they host the Winnipeg-based women’s squad the Winnipeg Swoosh.
