Pilots set for 2016 take-off
The Providence sports teams are back in action this weekend, and each of the basketball and volleyball squads will be looking to build on results that placed them at or near the top of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference standings at the end of 2015.
First up is a women’s volleyball contest between the second-place Pilots and fifth-ranked Universite de Saint-Boniface on Friday in Otterburne. Following their impressive showing at November’s National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship, Providence now turns its attention to provincial competition ahead of next month’s play-offs.
The men’s side—atop the MCAC standings and having lost just six sets all season—will also host Les Rouges on Friday, after which they and the women’s team will travel to Winnipeg for Saturday appointments at Red River College. The Rebels men can leap-frog Providence with a win while the last-place ladies remain winless after 12 matches.
Both Pilots basketball outfits will also resume play on Saturday when the Rebels visit Otterburne.
Presently first-place in Manitoba, the Providence men’s team has lost just one of five matches and in Daniel Dekleva, Romeo KC, and Nick Trelevean boast three of the province’s top 10 scorers. Trelevean also leads the MCAC in three-pointers with 12.
The women, meanwhile, are second in the ledger, and captain Isabella Selk’s 74 points on the campaign have her joint-top of the provincial scoring chart. Lauren Wiebe’s eight three-pointers are good for second in the province.
