Three Providence teams in Minneapolis for Regional Tournaments
Both Providence soccer teams and the women’s volleyball team will contest their Regional Tournaments this weekend in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ranked second in Division II of the National Christian College Athletic Association, the Pilots volleyball squad can advance to the National Championship with a semi-final win against Ellendale, Minnesota’s Trinity Bible College Lions and a final triumph over one of Ankeny, Iowa’s Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles and the North Central University Rams, out of Minneapolis.
The women have lost just four of 19 matches this season and are unbeaten in NCCAA regional play. They beat each of Trinity, Faith and North Central in September and dropped just a single set in the process.
The women’ soccer team, meanwhile, will take on the Eagles with a final berth against the Rams at stake. They beat Faith 1-0 in their first game of the season on September 5 but have since lost 11 of their last 12 matches, including an October 24 provincial semi-final.
On the men’s side the Pilots will progress to the National Championship with a victory from a winner-take-all showdown with Faith. Striker Mitchell Martens scored 15 goals in provincial play this season and will once again be counted on to produce offense for Providence.
Finally, the men’s basketball team will begin competitive play with a Friday match at home to Bemidji, Minnesota’s Oak Hills Christian College Wolfpack.
The Pilots previously beat Caronport, Saskatchewan’s Briercrest Bible College Clippers in a late-September exhibition game and will next face the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen on November 4.
