Men’s and women’s teams involved as Providence hosts soccer championship
Play-off soccer is coming to Otterburne.
On Saturday and Sunday the Providence Pilots will host the 2015 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Championship, and the women’s team will open the weekend with a semi-final against the first-place Red River College Rebels (Saturday, 12:00 p.m.).
The Rebels compiled a perfect 8-0-0 record during the regular season, in which they also outscored the Pilots a combined 10-0 over two matches.
Nevertheless, Providence is the reigning MCAC champion and will look to put up a sturdy defense of their title on their own patch.
The second-place Brandon University Bobcats will face the third-ranked Canadian Mennonite University Blazers in the other semi-final.
On the men’s side the Pilots will take on Universite de Saint Boniface Les Rouges (Saturday, 2:30 p.m.), who finished runners-up in regular season play and won both matches against Providence.
But in Mitchell Martens the Pilots have the MCAC’s top goalscorer. The Steinbach forward has so far tallied 14 times in nine matches, and any Providence success will likely require additional output from him.
The semi-final winner will go head-to-head with either CMU or Brandon University in the final. Both final matches will take place on Sunday (women at 1:00 p.m.; men at 3:00 p.m.) and all Providence matches will be streamed online. (Click here for the stream.)
The Pilots volleyball teams will kick off the weekend with Friday night matches at Brandon’s Assiniboine Community College Cougars.
The women’s squad has so far dropped just four of 18 contests and have posted two wins from three in MCAC play. Friday will mark the start of the men’s MCAC season.
