Pilots soccer teams entering final stretch of 2015 season
The Providence Pilots soccer teams are entering the final stretch of the 2015 season and will look to nail down Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference play-off places over the next nine days.
This year’s provincial championships will be held in Otterburne on October 24 and 25, and as it stands both the Pilots men’s and women’s teams will feature in the tournament.
That said, they must consolidate their berths in upcoming matches.
On Friday the two sides will face National Christian College Athletic Association rivals Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin. Ranked ninth in the largely United States-based NCCAA, the Pilots women will be going up against the top-seeded Sabercats with an eye to preparing for an October 17 showdown with MCAC opponents Canadian Mennonite University.
They’ll then complete their regular season schedule on October 18 at Red River College and hope for Assiniboine Community College defeats against Brandon University and CMU before making play-off preparations.
The men, meanwhile, will also face the Sabercats on Friday before hosting reigning MCAC champions Universite de Saint-Boniface on Monday. They’ll then complete the home-and-away series with a match against Les Rouges in Winnipeg on Wednesday.
Appointments with CMU and Red River will round out their schedule.
Presently second in the MCAC standings, the Pilots can still finish first overall but must also hold off Brandon University—just a point in arears—and both Saint-Boniface and Red River—each two points back—to ensure play-off qualification.
Providence forward Mitchell Martens, who was named MCAC Player of the Week earlier this month, is joint top-scorer of the division with 12 goals from six outings.
