Pilots men targeting first place in soccer standings
2015-09-24

The Providence Pilots men’s soccer team can soar to sole possession of first place in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference standings with either a win or a draw at home to Brandon University on Sunday.

The Pilots, having edged the Bobcats 4-3 in Brandon on September 20, followed-up the victory with a midweek triumph over the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers—Steinbach’s Mitchell Martens scoring a hat-trick in the 4-3 decision to bring his seasonal tally to eight.

La Broquire’s Gaetan Simard, also of Providence, has three goals to start the campaign and is joint second on the scoring ledger with Red River College’s Derek Tessier.

Prior to the 4:00 p.m. showdown the Pilots will host Aberdeen, South Dakota’s Presentation College Saints in a Saturday exhibition match (1:00 p.m.). The women’s soccer team will also face the Saints (3:00 p.m.) before welcoming the Bobcats ladies to Otterburne for Sunday’s 2:00 p.m. kick-off.

Both matches against Presentation College are part of the 2015 Harvest Festival, which will take place this Friday and Saturday at Providence. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will also feature in the festivities with exhibition contests with the Briercrest Clippers.

Having opened their schedule by beating the Assiniboine Community College Cougars in Shilo the Pilots women’s soccer team has lost to Red River, Brandon, and CMU in succession.

They’ll be looking to rediscover the form that helped them to a 1-0 victory at Ankeny, Iowa’s Faith Baptist Bible College when they battle the Bobcats on Sunday.

All four of the weekend’s soccer games can be watched LIVE on livestream.
