Pilots soccer teams kick off MCAC season
The Providence Pilots soccer program will kick off its Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) campaign this weekend with matches against Red River College and Brandon University.
Both the men's and women's teams are coming off resounding wins at Assiniboine Community College and will be hoping to pick up where they left off when the Red River College Rebels visit Otterburne on Saturday.
The Rebels men played the Brandon University Bobcats to a 1-1 draw in their season opener, and given that they finished runners-up in the MCAC play-offs in 2014 will represent stiff opposition for the Pilots (3:00 p.m.).
Head coach Martin Ward, however, is optimistic that his players can continue to improve on both sides of the ball following mixed results to open the 2015 schedule.
"Defensively we need to be disciplined and get people behind the ball," he said. "Offensively we need to be more efficient with our scoring chances."
A Sunday trip to Brandon and an afternoon match with the Bobcats will round out the weekend.
The women, meanwhile, are yet to concede a goal, nevermind lose a match, so far this term. They, too, will welcome Red River College to Otterburne on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) before travelling to Brandon on Sunday.
"Our games this weekend are against strong opponents," said coach Joel Coursey. "Our girls will need to step up to the challenge and play more aggressively than we have in our previous two games."
The Rebels women finished second last season; Brandon came third.
Both Pilots teams will be in action again Tuesday evening when they face the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
