Network Disruptions and Malware
A network disruption is when your device disables the network or prevents other people from using it. You are responsible for any disruption your device causes and may be fined $50 for every disruption. Your internet access may be disabled until the fine has been paid.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all of your devices connected to our network are free of malware and viruses. Providence is not responsible for disruptions caused by your device(s).
Routers and Personal Hotspots
Personal Routers may only be used with permission from the IT Department.
Please do not use personal hotspots (wireless routers, phone tethering, HP printer hotspots, etc) when you are in our wireless space. Our wireless space includes all residences, the SLC, and the main building including the library.
Your personal firewall should always be enabled.
Please disable file and printer sharing.
Peer-To-Peer Downloads (Bit Torrent, Bear Share, etc...)
Use of peer to peer (P2P) software is not allowed on the Campus network. It is allowed during non-peak hours on the Blackgate Wi-Fi network. If you need to use P2P software, please connect to the Blackgate Wi-Fi network, or plug in with an Ethernet cable.
If you have P2P software installed on your system please ensure that it is not running when connecting to our network. Even if you are not actively downloading the icon may still be visible on your task bar, running in the background - in this state it may still use network bandwidth so please exit and close the software completely.
